The Chinese language is a language with a clear pronunciation and largely
unvariable short and simple word forms. The tonal qualities of the language
render its information capacity larger than other non-tonal languages, while
making Chinese a beautiful spoken language.
Written Chinese follows certain rules which shape the characters. A dozen simple
strokes such as ...... make up more than 200 "one-member" or "root" characters,
of which no more than 100 are commonly used and alone will enable the student to
recognize 40 percent of the characters in current publication.
Chinese characters are also known as ideographic characters. Over 90 percent of
these ideographs are picto-phonetic or compound characters composed of at least
two "root" characters, one of which is the pictographic component expressing the
meaning, and the other the phonetic component denoting the pronunciation. Thus

These colourful, delightful writings cover a wide range of topics. Some describe
things seen and heard in China, while others introduce exotic customs or

For example, "Inside and Outside the Bus" vividly recounts common scenes on a
Beijing bus. The writer Acharya Dilip Prasad from Nepal tells of a young man
who, upon stepping into the bus, quickly occupies a seat that two old women are
offering each other. Sneered at and ridiculed by the other passengers, the young
man thinks it must be because his face is dirty or his trousers are unzipped.
After wiping his face and checking his trousers, he insensitively begins to wolf
down an ice cream. A German student writes about riding with two other students
on bicycles to the Great Wall in "The Third Time to the Great Wall. " In lively
detail he tells of the problems they encountered and the hospitable and helpful
people they met on the way. "Japanese Cherry Blossoms" by Kazutoshi Terazawa
depicts the strong affection that the Japanese have for cherry blossoms:
"A profusion of dazzling petals drift to the ground and pile up like snow. When
you raise a cup, rosy petals dance on the wine's surface. With one sip, the
flowers' charm and the wine's aroma intoxicate you, carrying you off to a floral
wonderland. "
Such vivid and exquisite writing puts the reader in the midst of a world of
cherry blossoms. In "Magnificent Reunion Island" a French student Theong-tai
Ah-sing Manuella describes a sunset at the seashore:
"The sun at dusk looks so large, round, and flushed. Its brilliant and beautiful
light casts itself upon the sea, spreading a vast stretch of bright, rosy,
glittering scales. "
The writer's nostalgia for her homeland is unmistakable. In brief, the entire
book is highly readable, since all the essays are excellent.
Each selection is annotated and given an overall commentary. Notes refer to
paragraph and sentence structure, transition in mood or meaning, consistency of
tone, and choice of words. The overall commentary discusses the author's
approach to the subject, control of the language, and general arrangement and
structure, pointing out special features or weaknesses.
The book can easily serve as supplementary material for a writing class for
international students. Teachers can choose exemplary compositions for analysis,
while students can use the book for reference. The book can also provide
excellent material for Chinese middle school students learning writing
